Movie Review: Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

When Ben Goudy (Tye Sheridan), Carter Grant (Logan Miller) and Augie Foster (Joey Morgan) are meant to spend the night in the woods with Scout Leader Rogers (David Koechner), Ben and Carter want to be at the senior student party instead. Unbeknownst to all, a zombie outbreak has rendered their town overrun with the undead, and it will be up to the scouts, along with waitress Denise Russo (Sarah Dumont) to try and save the day. Both written and directed by Christopher Landon (writer of Paranormal Activity 2, 3, 4 and The Marked Ones spin-off) Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is a horror-comedy film released in 2015.

+ the opening segment of the film (before the title card) features Blake Anderson (from Workaholics) as a janitor who has a run in with a recently turned-undead. The jokes and slapstick humour in this opening five minutes was the comedy highlights of the film
+ there are some humourous methods used to dispatch the zombies, featuring some creative home-made weapons scrounged up from a home depot store
+ the movie does have a great soundtrack, I must admit, including the classic “Rock You Like A Hurricane

– from the title, I expected something more like the video game How to Survive, which used humorous animated ‘guidebook’ entries on how to deal with the undead. The fact our protagonists were scouts didn’t really have anything to do with the zombies at all, aside from a few ‘knot’ references
– none of the actors really stood out, and every situation was seemingly just a segue into another boob- or dick-joke. One dick joke is dragged out in particular, and I just didn’t think it was very funny. After the title card, not much of the film really was
– similarly, there are not any real scares in the film. A few JUMP SCARE WITH LOUD NOISE moments may get your heart rate up, but the atmosphere never gets either spooky or laid-back (for a comedy film) and just meanders in the middle

Should you see this film: Probably not. As far as zombie movies go, it was very standard, with a minor ‘teen movie’ twist. The similarly themed Cooties will probably satisfy your zombie needs better.
