The second round of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s (NJPW) annual tournament, the New Japan Cup, concludes, as two heavy hitters slap some meat in the main event as the powerhouse of Los Ingobernables de Japon faces off with multi-time winner, Hirooki Goto, while Kota Ibushi and Taichi go to war in the semi-main. Rounding out the tournament, SHO looks to use his almost unreal power against a technical heavyweight in SANADA, and YOSHI-HASHI faces off against BUSHI, and a six man tag team match previews an upcoming match.
+ Hirooki Goto vs EVIL (New Japan Cup 2020 Second Round Match): as the main event, I did expect this to be a bit “harder” than it was. I love both guys but I can’t help but feel that both guys were only going 3/4 speed. Much like Ibushi/Taichi, I still enjoyed it, but just expected more
+ Kota Ibushi vs Taichi (New Japan Cup 2020 Second Round Match): this was good, but I’ll admit I expected it to be even better. With each man’s second at ringside, this had a few twists and turns to it, but overall it was a relatively straight forward match. I enjoyed it for what it was, but I feel these guys were holding back since htey weren’t in the main event
+ CHAOS (Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano & Yota Tsuji) vs Los Ingobernables de Japon (Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi & Tomohiro Ishii): god almighty I didn’t realise Tsuji was the same size as Shingo, and their bits and pieces together was some really good stuff. Hiromu/Ishii teases for their match tomorrow was great, too, and the continuing saga of Yano wanting to shave Hiromu was great. Naito was just there, and overall Yano didn’t so much wrestling, but this was still a lot of fun, and better than most of the other tags so far
+ SHO vs SANADA (New Japan Cup 2020 Second Round Match): this was really good, even if not quite SHO/Shingo levels. SHO is going to be a star whether he won or lost this match, and SANADA is SANADA. I can’t say I’m thrilled about a SANADA/Naito match, but damn if a SHO/Naito match wouldn’t be absolute money. Either way, this was great
– BUSHI vs YOSHI-HASHI (New Japan Cup 2020 Second Round Match): holy smokes, this was not good. This had some of the slowest ‘big offence’ from YOSHI-HASHI I’ve ever seen
> Does LIJ have all of the gold in New Japan, except the US (Moxley) and Tag (Tanahashi/Ibushi)? What a faction they are
Should you watch this event: God almighty why is YOSHI-HASHI still employed. What a world we live in. The rest of the show was really good, and sets up an incredible semi final tomorrow night.
