Avengers: Infinity War: Part I (May 2018)
And then here is Avengers 3, part one. I won’t bother stating all the returning cast, but the characters will be (deep breath): Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Spider-man, Ant-man, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, PLUS any new characters introduced in any previous film. Yeah, it’s gonna be big.
If the story is going to stick to the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, then there are going to be a far few shocks, deaths, returns and big bangs. Several major characters (if that is what you want to call the abstract notions of Order, Chaos, Eternity and everything in between) are going to be missing due to the rights to characters, but taking their place could potentially be the Celestials mentioned in Guardians of the Galaxy. The character of Death will most likely appear, in the guise of a gothic looking, gaunt woman. I vote for Eva Green.
As this is only part of the planned duology that is Avengers 3, you’d have to expect nothing will actually get resolved in this film. Thanos will get the gems, put them in (at least one of) the gauntlets, and go on his merry, life ending ways. But oh no, how can the heroes stop him?!
Black Panther (July 2018)
Wait, what? Avengers: Infinity War: Part I and THEN Black Panther? This guy already showed up in Captain America: Civil War over two years ago. Oh well. Chadwick Boseman will reprise his role as T’Challa / Black Panther, the king and ruler of Wakanda, a secluded African country rich in Vibranium (the stuff Captain America’s shield is made of). Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Ulysses Klaue, the guy that got his arm ripped off in Age of Ultron, a long time Black Panther villain.
Again, considering it is so long after his introduction, and this takes place after Infinity War part one, I would have to assume that this will be a flashback/catch up story, detailing the origins of T’Challa and his ascension to king. But who knows what Marvel has planned for their out-of-order entries.
Originally this film was set to be released in 2017, but after the rights to Spider-man were acquired (half acquired?) by Marvel studios, this film was pushed back. This has thrown a few things out, but I imagine it will make sense in context, one way or another.
Captain Marvel (November 2018)
The moniker of Captain Marvel has belonged to many characters in the Marvel universe, but Kevin Feige has confirmed that this Captain Marvel will be Carol Danvers (formerly known as Miss Marvel). My personal picks would be either Yvonne Strahovski or Katee Sackhoff for the role.
My favourite Captain Marvel was the alien Phyla-Vell, so I am not overly familiar with the closer-to-home Carol Danvers Captain Marvel, and such I am not sure who her enemies may be. Let me know in the comments if you have any ideas.
I imagine the film may introduce S.W.O.R.D. (a counterpoint to S.H.I.E.L.D) which focuses on combating extraterrestrial threats.
Avengers: Infinity War: Part II (May 2019)
Same deal here, all the good guys join together to take on all the bad guys.
If they are sticking to the story from The Infinity Gauntlet issues of the comics, this should wrap up the conflict in one way or another (probably not in the way you are thinking).
I imagine they will stick to the comics, with placeholders for the people that Marvel Studios doesn’t have the rights to, and such should manage to be a faithful adaptation overall.
Inhumans (July 2019)
I imagine the main cast are going to be the Inhuman Royal Family, lead by Black Bolt, who is unable to utter any sounds at all, lest he destroy EVERYTHING nearby. No seriously, this guy is so overpowered when written by some people. It’s awesome. Also in the Royal Family is Black Bolt’s wife Medusa (with the ability to control her hair, like a psychic Tangled character), Karnak (a deadly martial artist), Gorgon (with hooves able to cause monstrous earthquakes) and Lockjaw (a teleporting dog with incredible jaw strength).
Black Bolt is a long time favourite of mine, and I think Vin Diesel has the perfect look to play him. It also presents some interesting irony, if he were to voice Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, but never be seen, and then be seen as Black Bolt, but never speak. The Inhumans (as a race, not these particular people) have been introduced in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series, so technically this film won’t be their introduction.
Since this takes place after Infinity War, it is not clear whether the Inhumans will be in that film. If I had to guess, I would assume that this film will be the beginning of the next ‘phase’, or that the Inhumans will show up in later films as either villains, or at least a problem for the remaining heroes to deal with.
So, wow, that was a long post. After all this you’d have to think that Marvel will want to be rebooting things, or better still putting their films on hold. Whether Inhumans is the end of it, or Marvel is just days away from announcing another decade worth of films, it is going to be one wild ride.
