Released onto Netflix in November 2023, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is an animated action-comedy based on the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim, and specifically the 2010 film, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The eponymous Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) meets and falls for Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), but in order to date her, Scott must defeat Ramona’s seven Evil Exes.
+ all of the major (and most of the minor) cast are returning from the movie, with Cera, Winstead, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh etc. all returning to voice their original characters. For my money, much like the movie before it, it was Evans and Routh who steal the show as Lucas Lee and Todd Ingram, respectively, Ramona’s second and third Evil Exes
+ all throughout, there is just amazing animation. It matches the original graphic novel really well in motion, and the ultra extravagant fight scenes are a thing of beauty
+ as expected, the series is quite funny. Not to say there are not the more somber moments in between, but the jokes, physical comedy and audio cues are all on point to make you laugh, and it works
– intentionally or otherwise (that’s not really a question; it was intentional) there was a real subversion of advertisement here. Note that I absolutely loved what it was, so this is only a negative in general terms
– I had a few personal issues with some story beats, where it seemed something was being set up as a big confrontation that just never materialised. Much like the above point, this is a very soft negative as I can’t dock points for making things up in my head and getting mad they didn’t happen
Should you watch this show: I loved this to pieces. I wouldn’t call myself a Scott Pilgrim fanatic by any stretch, but I enjoyed the movie and I went into this expecting to enjoy it in the same way. Instead, I loved this, but in an entirely new way.
