[Please note: by the time you read this, the G1 Climax 33 will have concluded and a winner determined. I have avoided all spoilers, and am watching this with fresh eyes. I can only apologise at how far behind I am, and I am only reviewing the final match itself so there are full incidental spoilers for all other nights of G1 Climax 33 action. You can start the journey of non-spoiler reviews of each night here.]
It all comes down to this, as the final night of G1 Climax 33 actions sees the two finalists competing for glory in their own rights. On one side, Kazuchika Okada, widely regarded as the greatest professional wrestler of all time, who finished his block with a record of 6-1 and is looking for his record breaking third G1 Climax win in a row and history making fifth overall, which would tie him with Masahiro Chono in overall wins. His opponent, Tetsuya Naito, coming off a very scary scene on the previous night where an errant Will Ospreay kick nearly put his lights out in the main event. Naito finished his block action with a 5-2 record, and is looking for his third overall win of this most prestigious tournament. There can be only one man leaving Ryōgoku Sumo Hall with the trophy, and we find out who tonight.
+ Kazuchika Okada vs Tetsuya Naito (G1 Climax 33 Final): to the surprise of nobody at all, this was great. Naito was still feeling some effects from his match the previous night, but I am flabbergasted he made it out of that match in one piece anyway. Note that despite still clearly feeling the effects, it didn’t let Naito slow down or not take any risks as he still threw himself around like a ragdoll. I won’t repeat my Okada spiel as always, but I can admit he is one of the best big-match players in history, and this was no exception. Everything Okada does is so crisp and his timing with when to his his big moves is something that anyone should appreciate, wrestling fan or otherwise. I love G1 Climax season, and this was one of the best culminations in a long time
Should you watch this event: Loyal reader, I don’t want to sound too sentimental, but I love pro wrestling. If you’ve made it this far then of course you should watch this match. If you’ve never started a G1 before, the matches that Okada and Naito have had are a great place to start.
